Chad Gaffield, O.C., FRSC

Chad Gaffield is a Distinguished University Professor at the University of Ottawa where he is University Research Chair in Digital Scholarship and a member of the Department of History.

An expert on the sociocultural history of 19th and 20th century Canada, Dr. Gaffield served as President and CEO of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) from 2006 to 2014. In addition to his award-winning publications, Dr. Gaffield has led major interdisciplinary, multi-institutional and cross-sectoral research collaborations, most notably the building of the Canadian Century Research Infrastructure (CCRI), completed in 2009 that developed digital technology to mine historical evidence of the temporal and spatial forces that have shaped the 20th century.

Previous research initiatives include Dr. Gaffield’s studies of linguistic relations and the making of Canada’s official language identities, socio-demographic change during the later 19th and early 20th centuries, and childhood and family history during the initial decades of mass schooling in Canada and the United States.

Among his current board memberships, he serves on the Scientific Board of Europe’s Digital Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities as well as on the International Council for Science’s Committee on Scientific Planning and Review. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, he received the RSC’s 2004 J.B. Tyrrell Historical Medal for his outstanding contribution to the study of Canada. Recent awards include the Antonio Zampolli Prize given by the international Alliance of Digital Humanities Organizations in 2011 and the conferring of a Doctor of Laws honoris causa by Carleton University in 2015. He was appointed Officer of the Order of Canada in 2017. Dr. Gaffield received his BA (Hons) and MA from McGill University and his PhD from the University of Toronto.
