Tom Bursey

Vice President, Corporate Services & CFO

Tom Bursey is the Vice President, Corporate Services, and CFO at the Council of Canadian Academies.

Tom has over 25 years of experience in corporate services leadership, including in a number of executive and senior management roles. Prior to joining the CCA, Tom served as Vice President with Right Management Consultants and Managing Director with Alan Davis & Associates. He has held several senior management positions with the ATCO Group, with specific leadership focus on the operations of the North Warning System and the Alaska Radar System. Prior to his work with the ATCO Group, he worked in corporate services at Bell Aliant (NewTel Enterprises).

Tom currently serves as a Director and Chair of the Human Resources and Compensation Committee on the Board of C-CORE, a world leader in remote sensing, ice engineering and geotechnical engineering. He is a Director of LookNorth, a National Centre of Excellence for Commercialization and Research. Tom currently serves as a Director and Chair of the Audit & Finance Committee with the Public Service Health & Safety Association (PSHSA). He currently serves as a Director (Public Representative) with the Canadian Nursing Association (CNA). Tom also served as Director and Chair of the private company Board of CODE Inc. and as a Director and Chair of the Audit and Finance Committee for the Human Resources Professionals Association.

Tom is a Senior Fellow, with the Centre on Governance - Faculty Social Sciences, University of Ottawa, his focus is on corporate governance. Tom is a Fellow of The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario, and holds the designation of Fellow Chartered Professional Accountant (FCPA). He is a Fellow of the Society of Management Accountants of Canada and holds the designation of Fellow Certified Management Accountant (FCMA). He recently completed the CFO Leadership Beyond Finance Program, Smith School of Business (Queen’s University). He successfully completed the Executive Program at the Ivey School of Business (University of Western Ontario). Tom received the designation of Chartered Director (C.Dir.) from the Directors College at McMaster University and two specialized governance certifications: Audit Committee Certified (ACC) and Human Resources and Compensation Committee Certified (HRCC). He is a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors, and is an Institute-Certified Director (ICD.D).

Tom is an Honorary Life Member of the HRPA, and holds the designation of Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL). He also successfully completed the Advanced Program in Human Resources Management at the Rotman School of Management (University of Toronto). In 2007, he co-led the creation and launch of the Human Resources Compensation Committee Certified Program at the Directors College (McMaster University). Tom received the Vision Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Human Resources Profession in 2000 and again in 2010.

Tom received his Honours Bachelor of Commerce (B. Comm. Hons.) and his Master of Business Administration (MBA) degrees from Memorial University. He is the Founder and past Chair of the Affinity Newfoundland and Labrador Ottawa Dinner. In 2009, Tom received the J.D. Eaton Alumni Award recognizing his outstanding service to Memorial University.
