Cate Meechan is Director, Communications at the Council of Canadian Academies.
Cate joined the Council with over 12 years experience in strategic communications, government relations, and federal health research policy.
Cate was with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) for more than seven years where she served in senior roles within the communications and policy branches. She has provided strategic advice and support to various health ministers, and CIHR’s president and senior executive team on a number of policy and communication fronts.
While at CIHR, Cate was responsible for developing and implementing strategic communications and parliamentary outreach strategies designed to build public awareness and federal support for CIHR. Throughout her time at CIHR, Cate was central in providing both short- and long-term communications support for the Minister of Health on politically sensitive issues. Most recently, she was responsible for the national consultations and launch of CIHR’s new strategic plan.
Prior to joining CIHR, Cate worked at the federal political level for a variety of cabinet ministers. A highlight during her political career was supporting the Prime Minister during the 2000 federal campaign on the national tour.
