Assistant Professor in Geographical Information Systems, AITF-Microsoft Industry Chair in Open Sensor Web, University of Calgary (Calgary, AB)

Dr. Steve Liang is an assistant professor in Geographical Information Systems and AITF-Microsoft Industry Chair in Open Sensor Web in the Department of Geomatics Engineering, Schulich School of Engineering, University of Calgary. He holds a PhD in Earth and Space Science from York University and B.Sc. in Surveying Engineering from the National Cheng-Kung University.

In his current position, Dr. Liang’s research areas are Geospaital Information and Communication Technologies (GeoICT). Currently, his specific research interests lay at the intersection of Geo-Sensor Networks, Peer-to-Peer (p2p) computing, Internet GIS and Social Networks, specifically in the area of the Spatial Sensor Web (SSW), which is a spatial information infrastructure for heterogeneous sensor networks.

More specifically, he is interested in addressing the information model, interoperability, and scalability issues arising in the system design, implementation and applications for the Sensor Web. He is also actively involved in the establishment and development of Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards and OGC prototype systems. He is currently chairing the OGC sensor Web for internet of Things Standards Working Group and the OGC University Domain Workshop Group.

Dr. Liang is also on the editorial board for Earth Science Informatics (ESIN) and Transactions in GIS (TGIS). He was chair for the Web and Wireless GIS conference, the first International, workshop on Sensor Web Enablement, and the International Workshop on Computational Transportation Science.
