David Nostbakken

President/CEO of Nostbakken and Nostbakken, Inc. (N + N); Instructor of Strategic Communication and Social Entrepreneurship at the School of Journalism and Communication, Carleton University (Ottawa, ON)

As President of N+N, an Ottawa-based communications company, David Nostbakken specializes in strategic thinking and creative policy planning, especially relating to mass media and ICTs, distance learning, and public outreach for such clients as government ministries and agencies, museums, educational institutions, NGOs, and corporations. As a founder, Chair and Executive Vice President of Ecology Global Network, he works with universities worldwide to explore innovative uses of social networks and digital technologies for education and social change in matters of sustainable development. At Carleton University, Dr. Nostbakken teaches fourth-year and Masters students in strategic communication and social entrepreneurship centered on business-based uses of IUCT for social issues and development. Other teaching experience includes courses in communications at Conestoga College, the Universidad de Venezuela, and the University of Toronto, where he was a teaching assistant for Marshall McLuhan at the Centre for Culture and Technology. Dr. Nostbakken holds degrees from the University of Toronto (PhD, MEd) and the University of Saskatchewan (BA).

Previous positions include Founding President and CEO of WETV, a five-year initiative working in 100 countries dedicated to the reflection of cultural diversity through new broadcast and digital technologies; Director of Communications for the International Development Research Centre (IDRC); Founding Executive Director and Chair of Vision TV, the world’s first multi-faith television network; and Director of Public Education for the Canadian Cancer Society.

Dr. Nostbakken has lectured on six continents about communications issues and has contributed to books and academic journals, including Cultural Expression in the Global Village (Southbound Publishing, 1993), which he co-edited. He has served on a variety of advisory councils and boards of directors, and he currently chairs CCNM Enterprises, the publishing arm of the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine.
