Scott Vaughan

President and CEO, International Institute for Sustainable Development (Ottawa, ON)

Scott Vaughan joined the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) in April 2013 as President and CEO. Prior to joining IISD, he was Canada’s federal Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development for five years.

Previously, he was the Director of the Department of Sustainable Development of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington, DC; a Visiting Scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace; the Head of Economics at the NAFTA Environment Commission; and Counsellor at the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva, Switzerland. He held various positions with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), during which time he initiated its Financial Initiative and its work on trade issues. In the late 1980s, he worked at the Head Office of the Royal Bank Financial Group.

He holds post-graduate degrees from the London School of Economics, the University of Edinburgh and Dalhousie University, as well as an undergraduate degree from Mount Allison University.
