Luis Barreto

Luis Barreto is the President of his consultancy Dr. Luis Barreto and Associates. He is the former Vice-President of Clinical, Medical and Regulatory Affairs, and former Vice-President of Immunization and Science Policy at Sanofi Pasteur where he spent more than 23 years in research and development, leading clinical trials and shaping immunization policy in Canada and around the world.

An influential member of the Canadian vaccine landscape for over 25 years, Dr. Barreto was a member of the scientific advisory committee of the Public Health Agency of Canada/Canadian Institutes of Health Research’s Influenza Research Network (PCIRN). He led the clinical development and commercialization of many vaccines, including technologies such as acellular pertussis, Haemophilus influenzae type b and polio combinations for children, adolescents and adults.

Dr. Barreto is a member of various boards including the board of directors of Research Canada, the board of directors of the Pan-Provincial Vaccine Enterprise (PREVENT), and at Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization/ International Vaccine Centre (VIDO/InterVac) where he served as the chair of the board. He is a member of the Board of the International Consortium of Antivirals and has been appointed as the member of the Public and Political Support working group of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Decade of Vaccines program. He is a member of the private sector advisory board of the Networks of Centres of Excellence steering committee and a member of the advisory board of the Masters of Science in Global Health Program at McMaster University. He is currently the senior advisor to the Vaccine Program, Human Health Therapeutics, National Research Council and the Advanced Medical Research Institute (AMRIC) at Health Sciences North.  He is married to Lorraine and has two boys Rohit and Rahul.
