Karen Sobel

Senior Vice-President, Business Sustainability, Hydrocarbons & Chemicals, SNC-Lavalin (Calgary, AB)

Karen Sobel has 22 years of experience in project and engineering management, process design, plant commissioning and corporate management and is currently the Senior Vice-President of Business Sustainability for the Hydrocarbons and Chemicals Unit at SNC-Lavalin. 

Prior to this appointment Ms. Sobel held several senior levels positions at SNC-Lavalin, notably assuming the position of Vice-President, Engineering, where she was responsible for an engineering team of over 500 people for all disciplines, and accountable for the growth and development of the group.  In addition to her tenure with SNC-Lavalin, throughout her career Ms. Sobel has also held a series of high-level positions with Jacobs Canada Inc., Fluor Corporation, and Minproc Engineers Inc.

Her primary process expertise is in the gold and copper sectors, with project experience in large-scale oil sands projects, steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) and cogeneration facilities. Ms. Sobel’s leadership style and superb interpersonal skills contribute to the success of her work in Canada, the United States, Kazakhstan, Ghana, Bolivia, Philippines, Indonesia, Australia and Peru. She is fluent in English and speaks German.

Karen Sobel has a B.Sc. in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Utah.
