The State of Science and Technology in Canada

The Minister of Industry has asked the Council of Canadian Academies to assess the state of science and technology and industrial research and development in Canada. The Council will work with two expert panels to respond to this question. The end result will be a comprehensive evidence-base of all science and technology activity in Canada.

Progress Report

The Expert Panel on the State of Science and Technology in Canada held its third meeting from January 12-13 in Montreal. The report is currently being revised before it is submitted for peer review. The review period is an integral component of the Council’s overall assessment process. Following the review, the Panel will address all comments received at their next and final panel meeting in April 2012 in Ottawa.

Background

The new assessment on S&T will build on the Council’s inaugural report, The State of Science and Technology in Canada, released in 2006. The Council’s 2006 report highlighted the strengths and weaknesses of the Canadian science and technology environment. This new assessment will include an expanded scope including trends since 2006 and the geographic distribution of S&T strengths across Canada.
