The Council of Canadian Academies is pleased to announce the appointment of four new members to its Scientific Advisory Committee: Chad Gaffield, Eddy Isaacs, Stuart MacLeod, and Eliot A. Phillipson. The role of the Scientific Advisory Committee is to advise the Council's Board on the substance and procedure of expert assessments, particularly in terms of question selection and expert panel membership.

Chad Gaffield, FRSC, is a Professor of History and University Research Chair in Digital Scholarship at the University of Ottawa. An expert on the sociocultural history of 19th and 20th century Canada, Dr. Gaffield served as President and CEO of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) from 2006 to 2014.

Eddy Isaacs, FCAE, is CEO of Alberta Innovates - Energy and Environment Solutions (AI-EES), and Director General for CanmetENERGY in Devon, Alberta. As CEO of AI-EES, Dr. Isaacs is responsible for Alberta's strategic directions and technology investments in the areas of energy, renewables and emerging resources, and water and environmental management. He was also a member of the Council's Expert Panel on Energy Use and Climate Change.

Stuart MacLeod, FCAHS, has been Professor of Pediatrics at the University of British Columbia since 2003, moving to emeritus status in January 2015. He was Director of the Child & Family Research Institute at BC Children's Hospital until 2010 and through 2012 served as VP Research for the Provincial Health Services Authority of British Columbia. He was also Chair of the Council's Expert Panel on the State of Therapeutic Products for Infants, Children, and Youth.

Eliot A. Phillipson, FCAHS, is the Sir John and Lady Eaton Professor of Medicine Emeritus at the University of Toronto. From 2004 to 2010 he served as President and CEO of the Canada Foundation for Innovation. He has also served as Co-Chair of the Medical Review Panel of the Gairdner Foundation, as President of the Canadian Institute of Academic Medicine, and as Chair of the Council's Expert Panel on the State of Science and Technology in Canada, 2012.

The Council would like to thank three valued members of the Scientific Advisory Committee whose terms have come to an end: Clarissa Desjardins, CEO of Clementia Pharmaceuticals; Avrim Lazar, an independent consultant; and Murray S. Campbell, the Senior Manager, AI and Optimization at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center.

"We bid a very fond farewell to these dedicated members of our Scientific Advisory Committee," said Janet Bax, Interim Council President. "Each has played an important role on the committee and I would like to take the opportunity to thank them for their support. On behalf of the Council, I would also like to warmly welcome our new members, who bring a wealth of knowledge to the committee. We look forward to working closely with them as the Council continues to receive questions for assessment that are important to Canadians."

The members of the Scientific Advisory Committee are eminent representatives of the broad science community, drawing from the academic, business, and non-governmental sectors. Membership reflects balance in terms of discipline, geography, gender, and official language community.
