Updates from the RSC: Pursuing the Mission

Recognize: “The Class of 2011” will be made public over the summer. Nominations are now being sought for the awards that will be presented in 2012, and for the “Class of 2012.” The deadline for nominations is December 1, 2011. Promote: In partnership with the Canadian Federation of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Society presented world-renowned philosopher Dr. Kwame Anthony Appiah as part of the Big Thinking Series at the 2011 Congress at St. Thomas University and the University of New Brunswick.

Advise: This spring the Society’s five Task Forces, which have been established to strengthen the Society’s advisory capacity, began the process of public consultations. They have already received extensive feedback from a solicitation by the Task Force on Intervention in Matters of Public Importance, chaired by Irving Abella. Consultation documents from the Task Forces (1) on Awards and Recognition, chaired by Roseann Runte, (2) Task Force on an Academy of New Scholars in the Arts and Sciences, chaired by Chad Gaffield, (3) on Diversity in the Fellowship, chaired by Constance Backhouse and (4) on Institutional Members, chaired by Daniel Woolf, will be circulated in the coming weeks and months.

The Expert Panel Report on End of Life Decision Making is expected to be released within the next two months.

Canadian Academy of Engineering

The Canadian Academy of Engineering's Annual General Meeting, Induction of New Fellows, and Symposium was held June 2nd and 3rd, at the Sutton Place Hotel in Vancouver, British Columbia. There were forty-five new inductees.

Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Council President and CEO moderated a session on June 3rd entitled “The Tension: Energy Superpower and Sustainable Environment/Society?"
