David Castle is the Canada Research Chair in Science and Society and Associate Professor of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Ottawa.

Dr. Castle holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Alberta , a Bachelor of Arts Honours in Philosophy from the University of Alberta , a Master of Arts in Philosophy from McMaster University and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Guelph.

Prior to his current position, Dr. Castle was Associate Professor, Tenured Assistant Professor and Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Guelph . He also serves or has served on the Research Management Committees for the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada funded project Legal Models of Biotechnology Intellectual Property Protection: A Transdiscipinary Approach; the Centre for Intellectual Property Policy (McGill University); Genome Canada funded program Bridging the Emerging Genomics Divide and; Genome Canada funded Canadian Program on Genomics and Global Health.

Dr. Castle's research focuses on understanding the social impact of new science and technology. He studies a broad array of cultural, social and ethical issues raised by science and technology and their ramifications for Canadian domestic and foreign policy. Dr. Castle's research is based on the understanding that a careful assessment and subtle judgment about the context and conditions of the application of new technology are preconditions for its deployment in an ethically defensible manner.
