Peter Meekison is Adjunct Professor of Political Science at the University
of Victoria and University Professor Emeritus of Political Science at
the University of Alberta.
Prior to retiring from the University of Alberta in 1996, Dr. Meekison served as Deputy Minister for the Alberta Department of Federal and Intergovernmental Affairs; Vice-President (Academic) of the University of Alberta; Commissioner on the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples; constitutional adviser to the Alberta government; and was involved in the negotiation and preparation of draft legal texts that eventually became Section 92A of the Constitution Act, 1982. Dr. Meekison has participated in both the Meech Lake and Charlottetown Accord negotiations.
Dr. Meekison was holder of the Belzberg Chair in Constitutional Studies (Faculty of Law) (1991-1995); member of the BC Task Force on Energy Policy; Public Administrator of Okanagan University College; member of the Campus Alberta Quality Council and the Board of the British Columbia Safety Authority and; member of the panel appointed by the Council of the Federation charged with reviewing fiscal imbalance in Canada.
He currently sits on the Board of Directors of the Canada West Foundation and is a member of the Advisory Council of the Institute of Intergovernmental Relations at Queen's University. He has also been involved in a number of international activities, particularly with the Ottawa based Forum of Federations.
Dr. Meekison received his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering
(1959) and his Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Political Science (1961)
from the University of British Columbia. He received his Master of Arts
in Political Science (1962) from the University of Western Ontario and
his Ph.D. in Political Science (1966) from Duke University. Dr. Meekison
is also an Officer of the Order of Canada (1986).
