President's Message 

 

This spring we released two highly anticipated Council assessments, Aboriginal Food Security in Northern Canada: An Assessment of the State of Knowledge and Environmental Impacts of Shale Gas Extraction in Canada. We are already seeing the impacts generated by our Food Security report, released on March 27th. Read more.

 

 

Expert Panels at Work

On March 27th, the Council of Canadian Academies released a new expert panel report entitled Aboriginal Food Security in Northern Canada: An Assessment of the State of Knowledge. The assessment was conducted by a 15-member panel of distinguished and multidisciplinary experts from Canada and abroad. Harriet V. Kuhnlein, Professor Emerita of Human Nutrition and Founding Director, Centre for Indigenous Peoples' Nutrition and Environment (CINE) at McGill University, chaired the Expert Panel. Annette M. Cormier O'Connor, FRSC, FCAHS 

 

In this issue of Council e-News, we speak with Annette M. Cormier O'Connor, FRSC, FCAHS, Distinguished Professor and Professor Emerita in the School of Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences, at the University of Ottawa. Professor O'Connor is Chair of the Expert Panel on Effectiveness of Health Risk Communication, one of our newest assessments in our growing health portfolio. Professor O'Connor's research has contributed to a new field in health science known as "shared decision-making" between patients and health professionals. Read more.

Marcel Côté

 

It is with tremendous sadness that we have learned of the sudden passing of Marcel Côté on May 25th. Marcel was a longtime friend and supporter of the Council. He firmly believed in the importance of evidence-based policy-making and the role the Council played in providing unbiased science advice. Marcel was a member of the Council's Scientific Advisory Committee, sat on the Business Innovation Panel, and most recently provided support in the development of Paradox Lost: Explaining Canada's Research Strength and Innovation Weakness. His contributions were many and our heartfelt condolences go out to Marcel's family. Read more

Ten year old Kathryn Aurora Gray kicked off 2011 with a bang -- a very big bang. On January 2nd, the Fredericton, New Brunswick resident discovered an exploding, luminous star, otherwise known as a supernova. She spotted the star in an image of a galaxy taken on New Year's Eve 2010 from Abbey Ridge Observatory.
